“The art course itself is superb. The teaching is of the highest standard with each person getting their coaching and encouragement entirely individually. Having said that, Tod also managed to make us all feel very comfortable with each other, despite considerable differences in age, experience and temperament between us. I think we all benefitted hugely.” Claire, Portrait Course, 2018

“Sir William Nicholson - a fine artist - told me often that it was easy to put on the paint if you know where to put it.”
Sir Alfred Munnings PRA (1878-1959)

“Real painters understand with a brush in their hand.” Berthe Morisot (1841-1895)

“Even an abstract form has to have a likeness.” Willem De Kooning (1904-1997)

We are not running a Portfolio course in 2019

The Portfolio Course - a five week diploma level course for those wanting to acquire an artistic competence or intending to enter an Arts career

Students in the gardenOur unique compressed long course. The Portfolio Course is five weeks of drawing all subjects in different media and painting these subjects in oils. It includes: colour and pigment theory; technical advice; preparation of drawing and painting media; observational drawing and painting from life. Subjects include: landscape, the nude, portraits, interiors, animals and still life.

The course enables the creation of a portfolio for entry into art school and provides a foundation in techniques that are not widely taught these days. It gives an excellent grounding in all aspects of painting and drawing to novices, amateurs and professionals. Many of the students who have attended this course and received our diploma have become professional artists.

This specialist “crammer” portfolio course is a full course to a Diploma level. Designed particularly for those who are preparing for art school or wishing to acquire a competence in all aspects of painting and drawing. In its condensed form, the course, with the total commitment on the part of the student combined with our teaching ethos will provide a way of preparing a portfolio for entry to any art establishment. This is equivalent in teaching time as attending one year at art school in the UK or America, for a third of the price.
